The Power of Family Portraits

Growing up, my parents took a lot of photographs of my sisters and I. We'd take the rolls in to the local photography shop to be processed and printed, and I have fond memories of us pinching minties from the jar on the counter as we grew older, taller, and cheekier.

The printed photos lined the walls and shelves of our home.
Snapshots of us doing anything and everything.
Adventures cutting firewood; playing in the rain in the garden; our crazy bubble-bath mohawks; and even the time my sister squeezed herself in to one of the buckets Dad used for work.

I'm not sure why they originally started, why they took so many photos of us. There were photographers in our family, so perhaps the love of it, the desire to capture every little thing, had rubbed off somewhat.

I'm sure though, that they never anticipated the impact it would have on me, and I'm sure on my sisters. The sense of pride when we showed friends and family when they visited, and how they helped to shape our feelings of worth, place and of self.

The photographs, to Mum and Dad, weren't masterpieces in themselves:

We were.

And, because we were displayed, we knew it.

Families are all different, and each family chooses different types of photographs to hang on their walls. But if I've one piece of advice, it's to choose pieces which aren't just portraits of your child, but representations of who they are as a person, and who you are as a family. These are the photographs which transcend the power of a simple portrait. They're talking points, they're good pick-me-ups for the tired soul, and they're a piece of art which gives your child something each and every time they pass them.

The Clancy's have chosen a stunning leather bound envelope of fine art prints to display this session. It's personalised, long lasting and something which will be shared and shown over cups of tea, as he grows, and maybe even to his children some day. The prints are perfect for popping into a frame, to place on bedsides or mantel pieces. I'm SO excited to give it to them!
